Shirley Chisholm was a groundbreaking figure in American political history. Not only was she the first black female in congress, but she was also the first black woman to run for President. She knew she could not win, but ran anyway because she knew that we had to start somewhere to pave the way for other people of color to pursue political office. Many people believe that without Shirley opening the door, President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris would not have been elected. In this self-guided non-political program, girls will learn about how congress works, how to stand up for themselves respectfully, and how to make a positive change. Through hands-on activities, girls will create a platform that is important to them that can launch their political career
